MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University Athletics continues to demonstrate that success is measured by far more than wins and losses.
The Lions have been recognized as an NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution, one of the association's highest honors recognizing colleges and universities that intentionally cultivate a culture centered on integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. The designation acknowledges institutions that fully embrace the NAIA Champions of Character initiative through leadership development, academic achievement, community engagement, character education, and exemplary conduct in competition.
For FMU, the recognition is more than an award, it's validation of a department-wide commitment to building student-athletes who excel in every aspect of life.
"From the day I arrived at Florida Memorial University, I have been intentional about creating a culture where excellence, accountability, and character are the standard in everything we do," said Director of Athletics, Chandra Dorsey-Felton. "This recognition reflects the commitment of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff to living those values every day. Being 'The Standard' is not just a slogan, it is the expectation for everyone who wears the Orange and Blue. We will continue striving to represent Florida Memorial University with pride both on and off the field."
Throughout the 2025-26 academic year, FMU Athletics invested heavily in programming designed to develop the complete student-athlete. From leadership education and academic support to financial literacy, mental wellness initiatives, community service, and career readiness, the department remained intentional about creating an environment where character is developed alongside athletic performance.
That commitment was evident from the opening days of the academic year. Student-athletes began the fall semester with the Welcome Back Celebration, where expectations for academic success, leadership, conduct, and the NAIA Champions of Character Core Values were established. Throughout the year, additional educational opportunities, including Financial Football presented by Chase Bank, the Blunt Facts, Smart Choices program, and Roar Rest & Wellness Day, equipped student-athletes with valuable life skills focused on financial responsibility, healthy decision-making, and mental wellness.
Academic excellence also remained a defining pillar of FMU Athletics. Through structured study halls, faculty support, academic monitoring, and recognition programs such as the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Honors & Awards Day, student-athletes were celebrated not only for their athletic accomplishments but also for leadership, academic achievement, and service to the university community.
The department's impact extended well beyond campus.
FMU student-athletes volunteered throughout South Florida by mentoring youth during Youth Day, inspiring the next generation during National Girls & Women in Sports Day, and serving local families through multiple Pembroke Park Community Food Giveaways. These initiatives reflected the University's belief that leadership is demonstrated through service and that student-athletes have a responsibility to positively influence their communities.
The Lions also embraced opportunities to celebrate diversity, prepare for careers after graduation, and continue growing as leaders. Student-athletes participated in International Education Week, career expos, professional development sessions, and leadership programming focused on integrity, responsibility, respect, and sportsmanship, reinforcing that the mission of FMU Athletics extends well beyond competition.
Even in moments of adversity, FMU Athletics remained committed to the Champions of Character philosophy. The department addressed conduct-related challenges through educational interventions, teachable moments, accountability meetings, and ongoing conversations centered on the NAIA Core Values, demonstrating that character development is an ongoing process rather than a one-time achievement.
Earning NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution status serves as a reflection of the culture taking shape throughout FMU Athletics, a culture where competitive excellence is matched by academic achievement, leadership, service, and integrity.
As the Lions continue raising the standard, this recognition reinforces Florida Memorial University's commitment to developing champions in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.
