HIALEAH, Fla. | Florida Memorial University gets set to begin a new year of men's soccer this week against Florida National. Head coach
David Martinez enters his third year at the helm, taking the team to the postseason the last two seasons.
"I'm excited to enter my third year leading this team." said Martinez "I'm really proud of this team and I believe we have something special this season. We have a senior-heavy roster that will help set the tone and lead these men on the field."
FMU sees a balance of returners and newcomers to the 2026 lineup. Nine seniors return this year, including
Santiago Medina,
Lucas Biggeman,
Tinotenda Dominic Nhema,
Juan Rizo,
Rafael Coronado,
Juan Mora,
Julian Restrepo,
Cesar Herrero, and
Luis Gutierrez.
Frank Sanchez, and
Vicente Silva return for their junior years as well, providing more parody for the Lions.
Carlo Lopez and
Luigi Gallo return as graduate students, providing more veteran presence to the team.
FMU sees a multitude of newcomers to the squad, including seniors
Antonio Moreno, and
Adriano Melo. Freshmen
Gabriel Zapata,
Logan Mir, and
Robert Duarte will make their collegiate debut with the FMU Lions.
The Lions finished the 2025 season with a 7-8-3 record and a 4-3-1 conference record, making the SUN Conference tournament for the third straight year. They narrowly fell in round one of the SUN Conference Tournament to New College of Florida 2-0 in Sarasota. FMU is searching for its second SUN Conference title and its first since 2012.
Kickoff is slated for 10:45 a.m. in Hialeah at Henry Milander Park - Ted Hendricks Stadium. The home opener is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 against Webber International at 7 p.m. at Orange Bowl Field at Ives Estates Park.
