HIALEAH, Fla. | Florida Memorial University started its season with a bang, by defeating Florida National in the season opener 2-1 at Henry Milander Park - Ted Hendricks Stadium. The Lions were down early in the match, but battled through to control the final 50 minutes to start 1-0 for the second straight year.
FNU got on the board first in the 14th minute, putting the Lions behind early. That changed in the 41st minute, when freshman
Gabriel Zapata, assisted by senior
Rafael Coronado, found the back of the net to tie the match 1-1 before the half. Most of the second half went scoreless, until the 82nd minute, when freshman
Jared Arevalo, assisted by Zapata, scored FMU's second goal to take their first lead of the day, a lead they held onto for the final eight minutes, giving FMU the win.
Senior
Juan Mora played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal, with two saves on the day.
The Lions return to action Saturday, August 22, for a road match against Florida College. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Qualls Field in Temple Terrace, Fla.
