Dwayne Miller joined the FMU family as head track & field coach in 2024.
Miller is an internationally acclaimed track and field coach whose career spans more than three decades of elite achievement across collegiate, national, and Olympic competition. Widely respected for his technical expertise in sprints, hurdles, relays, and horizontal jumps, Miller serves as the Head Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach at Florida Memorial University (FMU) in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Throughout his career, Miller has developed a reputation for producing world-class competitors, guiding athletes to more than 40 All-American honors, 20 national titles, five World Championship medals, three World Junior gold medals, and three Olympic gold medals. In recognition of his global coaching impact, he earned the 2004 USOC Developmental Coach of the Year award, the 2008 USA Track & Field (USATF) Nike Coach of the Year honor, and the prestigious Order of Ikkos Award at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Global & National Federation Leadership
Before taking the helm at Florida Memorial University in January 2024, Miller directed high-performance national track and field programs across Asia:
- Team Malaysia (2019–2023): Served as Technical Director and National Coach, guiding the squad to a Silver medal in the Men’s 4x100m relay and a Bronze medal in the Women’s 800m at the 2022 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
- Team Qatar (2015–2018): Directed national sprints and hurdles, leading the Men’s 4x400m relay team to a Gold medal at the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships.
- Team Saudi Arabia (2013–2015): Coached the Men’s 4x400m relay team to an Asian Championship Gold, secured qualification for the 2013 IAAF World Championships, and claimed Silver (Men’s 200m) and Bronze (Men’s 4x400m relay) medals at the 2014 Asian Games.
Collegiate & Grassroots Track Development
Miller laid the foundation of his coaching career in the competitive Virginia circuit. Beginning in 1991, he coached with the Norfolk Real Deal Track Club, helping establish a premier youth development pipeline that nurtured multiple future global icons. His coaching resume in the region includes tenures at Blair Middle School, Maury High School, Hampton University, and Christopher Newport University.
From 2010 to 2013, Miller served as an Assistant Coach at his alma mater, Norfolk State University, mentoring NCAA Division I qualifiers across multiple sprint, hurdle, and jump disciplines. At Florida Memorial University, his leadership made an immediate mark, steering an expansive roster of FMU student-athletes to the 2024 and 2025 NAIA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships.
World-Class Athlete Roster
Miller has coached and trained an international stable of elite competitors representing the United States, Grenada, Panama, Puerto Rico, Poland, and Sweden, including:
- LaShawn Merritt (USA): 2008 Olympic Champion and 2009 World Champion in the 400m (PRs: 43.75 in the 400m; 19.80w in the 200m).
- LaTasha Colander Clark (USA): 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 4x400m relay.
- Rachelle Boone-Smith (USA): 2005 IAAF World Championship Silver Medalist in the 200m (PR: 22.22).
- Tosin Ogunode (Qatar): Asian Indoor 60m Record Holder (PR: 6.50).
Athletic Career & Personal Life
Before entering the coaching ranks, Miller was an accomplished track and field athlete. He starred as a sprinter and long jumper for the Norfolk State University Spartans before competing on the professional track and field circuit from 1988 to 1994.
Miller earned his Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication from Norfolk State University and leveraged his degree across a 15-year career in professional television broadcasting with WHRO-TV and WTKR-TV. He and his wife, Yolanda, are the proud parents of three children: Duane, Marcus, and Michaiah.
