MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | It's a historic night for Florida Memorial University, as the Lions defeated St. Thomas 1-0 in the conference opener/Battle of Miami Gardens. This marks the first time since 2010 that the Lions defeated their crosstown rival, and the first Battle of Miami Gardens win for head coach
Marc Lue Young, who continues his historic season at the helm of the program.
The match was scoreless for the first half, with STU putting pressure on the Lions' goal with nine first-half shots. The tide turned in the Lions' favor. Striking sensation
Javine McKnight delivered the match-winning shot, with assistance from senior
Lumturie Berushi, in the 53rd minute. While the Bobcats had 15 shots to FMU's four in the second half, they failed to find the back of the net, setting the stage for a historic night for the FMU Lions.
Goalkeeper
Isabella Rueda put together a defensive masterclass, playing all 90 minutes and surrendering zero goals, along with 12 saves.
The win moves FMU to 6-3-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.
The Lions return to action Saturday, October 3, for a road match against No. 14 Southeastern. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at SEU Soccer Field.
