MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University dominated fellow HBCU and NCAA Divison II opponent, Edward Waters at Dr. Lester Brown Park, with a commanding 4-1 victory over the Tigers. The Lions have outscored opponents 20-9 on the season, with all three wins being by three goals or more.
The Lions kicked off scoring in the 16th minute, when junior
Javine McKnight scored her fourth goal of the season, with assistance from sophomore
Jennifer Canarutto. Shortly after, senior
Alexia Medrano Martinez scored her first goal of the season to extend the Lions lead to 2-0, in the 20th minute.
Coming out of halftime, the Tigers cut the lead in half with a goal in the 47th minute, but FMU wasted no time answering the call, when McKnight scored her second goal of the match in the 51st minute to reopen the lead to two goals. The Lions put the final nail in the coffin in the 65th minute, when freshman
Allyson Knowles scored her first collegiate goal, finalizing the Lions victory over EWU, 4-1.
Senior
Isabella Rueda started the game at goalkeeper for the Lions. She played the first half, allowing zero goals with three saves. Junior
Isabelle Mapanao played the second half, allowing one goal, along with four saves.
The win moves FMU to 3-3 on the season.
The Lions return to action Friday, September 18, for a home match against Florida College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dr. Lester Brown Park.
