King’s Career Night Not Enough, Lions MBB Fall To Ave Maria Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Junior Anfernee King scored a career-high 27 points – including a three-pointer at the final buzzer – but it wasn't enough for Florida Memorial University to rally back on visiting Ave Maria University as it fell 91-90 Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
How It Happened
  • FMU trailed 89-84 with nine seconds left to play.
  • Lions guard Eric Hester knocked down a three-pointer to cut it to two with six seconds left.
  • Florida Memorial intentionally fouled AMU's Daryl Lewis, who knocked down a pair of free throws to put Ave Maria up 91-87.
  • King raced down court and sank a deep pull-up three-pointer with 0.4 second left on the clock to make it 91-90.
  • The Gyrenes inbounded the ball, and the time ran out before FMU could take another foul.
  • After trailing by as many as 14 in the second half, FMU began chipping away at Ave Maria's lead.
  • Over an 11-minute span, the Lions turned that double-digit deficit into a tight 2-point (81-83) game.
  • Ave Maria went 2-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line over the final 1:07 of the game.

  • King shot 11-of-23 from the field and 5-for-12 from three-point range to manufacture his team-high point total.
  • Lions senior Brent Holcombe finished with 21 points and a team-high 9 rebounds.
