Tolbert Has Strong Night, FMU WBB Drops Home Opener To LSU-Shreveport

Florida Memorial went cold from the field in the fourth quarter
 
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – In her first game back in the Lions' lineup, senior Keaynna Tolbert scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds but it wasn't enough as an overall cold shooting night hurt Florida Memorial University as it dropped its home opener to visiting Louisiana State University-Shreveport Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
The Lions ended up shooting 31 percent (24-for-77) from the field and just 10 percent (2-for-19) from three-point range. Even Tolbert's game-high point total was manufactured on 8-of-21 shooting from the field.
 
After trailing by five heading into the fourth, FMU (0-3) made one last push in the early part of the final quarter and pulled within two of the Pilots twice – the final time being at 58-56 after a Chantel Barnett three-pointer. LSU-Shreveport responded by knocking down back-to-back three-pointers, pushing its lead to eight with four minutes to play.
 
Florida Memorial made just 2 of its final 11 shots over the last four minutes of the game as the Pilots pulled away and cruised into the final 73-60 final.
 
The Lions' best stretch came in the third quarter, when it turned up its defensive intensity and went on a 9-0 run – turning a 37-33 deficit into a 42-37 lead with 6:37 left in the third. Tolbert sparked the run with a three-pointer, then Aliyah-Deen Ahmad nabbed away a couple of steals and turned them into layups on the other, seemingly swinging momentum in FMU's favor.
 
Ahmad, who was the only Lions' player to finish with a shooting percentage over 50 percent (7-for-13) finished the game with 15 points for FMU along with 5 steals.
 
Barnett had a tough night overall, going 2-for-19 from the field (1-for-5 from three) to finish with 8 points and fouled out in just 21 minutes of action. Monique Esbrand finished with 6 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Tolbert, a First-Team All-Sun Conference selection this past season, also added 4 steals and 4 assists Thursday.
 
That third quarter spurt was Florida Memorial's best of the night, however. LSU-Shreveport (3-2) methodically erased the Lions' scant lead in the third and ended up closing the quarter on an elongated 14-4 run to hold a 51-46 lead over FMU heading into the fourth.

The Pilots ended up having four players finish with double-digit point totals – led by DeAuja Thompson's 19 – and finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range, and 82 percent from the free throw line.
 
Up next for the Lions will be a trip to Naples, Florida, where they will take on NCAA Division-I opponent Florida Gulf Coast University in an exhibition game on November 9th.
