Tolbert Shines, FMU Falls To No. 15 Southeastern Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's women's basketball saw junior guard Keaynna Tolbert match her season-high point total of 35 points but couldn't quite keep pace with nationally-ranked No. 15 Southeastern University, falling 86-67 Saturday afternoon in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
Tolbert, the leading scorer in the Sun Conference, turned up the volume on her offensive output in the fourth quarter – as the Lions trailed by as many as 38 – scoring 19 of her 35 points in the final 10 minutes. Tolbert also recorded 8 steals, setting her new season high, along with 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
 
The shorthanded Lions did shave off some of Southeastern's lead over the final six minutes of the game – going on an 11-0 run at one point and outscoring the Fire 23-4 in that span to create the final 86-67 margin.
 
Florida Memorial (7-9, 7-8 The Sun Conference) played Saturday with just seven available players – missing Janae Markes, Micah Cooper, Jamari Tillman, and Destiny Marin – the latest addition to the injury report. No other FMU player scored in double digits Saturday – Cheyanne Whitfield was the next-highest scorer behind Tolbert with 9 points.
 
Whitfield also finished with 6 rebounds while Heather Durand and Chantel Barnett each added 7 points, and Unique Tate chipped in 6 points.
 
Southeastern (17-2, 15-0), which hasn't lost a regular season game to a conference opponent in the past five seasons, had nine different players register points Saturday – led by 6-foot-2 graduate transfer Gabrielle Ozoude's 23 points and 15 rebounds.
 
FMU, which has dropped its past two games, will have a couple of days to flush the result against the Fire and heal up – especially for Barnett, who left Saturday's game late with an apparent upper extremity injury – as it won't return to the hardwood until February 4th when it hosts Ave Maria University; a team the Lions defeated by 58 points back on January 23rd.
