Florida Memorial University Athletics

Florida Memorial #14 Men's Basketball team used a big first half of precision shooting to defeat the University of the Virgin Islands 85-54 for their season opener at the FMU Wellness Center.

In the first half, the Lions quickly jumped out the gates against the Virgin Islands with a pair of baskets and then went on a 6-0 run to put the Lions on top, 35-15, at the 1:16 mark. University of the Virgin Islands was held scoreless for three minutes before they made a basket. The teams went into the locker room with Florida Memorial up by 21 points, 41-20.

Coming out of the break, the Lions continued to pour on the offense at the start of the second half.  With 9:10 left on the clock, they were leading by 37 points (71-34).  The team shot 46.7 percent from the field in the second half, as opposed to 37 percent in the first.  The Lions also shot 30 percent from beyond the arc and 31-of-37 from the charity stripe.  Florida Memorial out shot Virgin Islands, registering 42.1 percent from the field while Virgin Islands shot 33.3 percent.  The Lions also out-rebounded their opponent by a 50-28 margin.  

Davon Williams led a balanced scoring attack for FMU with 12 points and 10 boards.  Kase Carrera chipped in 12 points, 2 boards and 1 steal and Evens Jacques poured in 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Travis Mitchell scored 11 points and had 6 assists, while Kameron Jimenez-Fox had 9 points.
